I remember in my Arabic class we were going over the alphabet and the teacher was like there’s no ‘P’ etc and this white girl was like wait what but my names Paige and my teacher was like lol then we’d pronounce it as beige and she was so offended I’m crying thinking about it

One of my mom’s friends, Hugh, went to France and they had a lot of trouble pronouncing his name because the entire thing was silent.

salut je m'appelle [REDACTED]

lol when I lived in France my host family had a friend names Hugh. We saw him and his family a lot.

They pronounced it “oog” and I didn’t know until the day before I left France that his name was Hugh. I just thought he had some weird caveman nickname 😭

that is hands down the funniest addition to this post

if you ever doubt your writing, be it your themes, or the reason behind it, remember that h.g wells wrote war of the worlds both as a commentary on colonialism and the horrors it brings, and because he fucking hated his neighbours and his 13 hour job, and wanted to write about the town in which he lived getting blasted to the fucking ground by lasers into an irreparable heap and all of the townspeople dying painfully

you, too, can channel your hatred for that guy that lives down the hall and blasts music at 4am into the one of the most influential science fiction stories ever written! fuck it! i believe in you!!

This is one of the most inspirational things I’ve ever seen

thank god for the mythbusters though because it used to be that whenever i knew i had insomnia i’d just kind of accept it and stay up doing whatever until my morning classes and spend the day feeling like shit

but then they did an episode where they established that even just fucking laying there for a half hour, not even sleeping just laying there and not even for an hour, makes a significant difference and you’ll feel way better

it has made a huge difference in my life to know that it’s okay if i can’t fall asleep, it takes a lot of the pressure off and ironically helps me fall asleep better

…i did not know this, thank you

If anyone wants to look it up, the episode was specifically the Deadliest Catch crossover ep, and the myth was that it’s better/safer when working a 30 hour shift to take a 20 minute nap every six hours rather than try to power through. They did an obstacle course test, one without naps and one with, and even though they couldn’t even sleep half the time the naps resulted in their scores doubling.

So actually I undersold it, even if it’s 7:40 and your alarm goes off at 8 just lie down and shut your eyes and it will still be better than nothing

This was immensely huge for me as someone with anxiety issues. I used to drive myself delirious trying to ‘calm down before I went to sleep’ by staying up and just working myself into a panic. Having this knowledge and knowing that laying down and closing my eyes is a better option and counts as rest was way more helpful, eased my mind and actually sends you to sleep faster.

I didn’t know this. This makes me feel a little better

I saw this post a while ago, and my life has been all the better for it. Releasing that stress to fall asleep when you’re on short hours to begin with has been a huge relief.

I shared the info with a coworker who had trouble sleeping the night before a sun-has-just-come-up shift, and it has helped her as well.

How to grow a sunflower house

@bacheloretteofscience THIS WORKS so well!

If you want to get super fancy, do a second ring on the outside of 4’ tall sunflowers then a third outer ring of the 1’ tall teddy bear sunflowers.  If there are any gaps you can interplant with cosmos, amaranth and nasturtiums or (if there are huge gaps) gourds.

My mom used to do this for me in the backyard as a kid- it really works and I always loved it! Spent so many summer days having tea parties with teddy bears in my sunflower house.

not to sound too much like a millennial who has lived through two major economic downturns but like, i don’t think banks should be able to give you 0.1% interest and call it a “high interest savings account” with a straight face. thanks for the 10¢ i guess, if i find a dime on the sidewalk i’ll have doubled my free money for the month

not even an exaggeration

We need more of this but even bigger actually put whole community centers, gyms, schools, restaurants, theaters and hospitals in too.

this fucks so hard i’m gonna be walking funny for days

Jess kellgren-fozard recently talked about how even as a disabled person, she’d followed the English narrative to move into small town or rural semi isolation for ‘independence’

Visiting family in Malaysia she realised what a liberation it was living in a big tower block with cafes and laundry and shops and everything in your building connected by lifts. How much more she could do. And how weird the idea of independence was linked to isolation and inefficiency in the UK.

My wifes (rural german) family think we’re weird and or refusing to grow up because we intend to stay in the city. But it’s bad enough getting round town to the doctors and clinics and shops as it is, at least they’re all connected by bike or tube.

And it’s not just about disability, but families and everyone else having easy access to resources and community. Things to do, third spaces, resource pooling.

If Americans think all this so bad why like cruise ships?

I want slower packages delivered by transportation workers who are paid more to work less and I’m not kidding

@mortuarybees: #i think its deeply important for all of us to come to terms with the fact that its actually fine to be mildly inconvenienced

Some of us are old enough to remember when literally everything took about 4 weeks to ship.

My couch is arriving in 4 weeks and company gave us a $200 gift card in apology after telling us it would take 4 weeks when we bought the thing. I-this instant gratification is really doing something to us. I know I sound like a grumpy old woman but it is ok to wait for things if it means fellow human beings are treated fairly.
